Richard K. Diran Homepage

Richard at work in southwestern China during his search for the
elusive Yeti -- better known in the West as "The Abominable Snowman."

Richard is a truly extraordinary man, a gifted photographer, a published author of a beautiful coffee-table book on the rapidly vanishing hill tribes of Burma, a working -- and professionally- trained gemologist, and an adventurer or no small proportions.  In 2000, Richard undertook a major expedition into southern China's Himilayas in search of the fabled Yeti -- better known in the West as "The Abominable Snowman."  Then late in 2001 he went far up a Burmese river to photograph tribal people who had never been photographed before.

Richard also has a surprisingly philosophical side to him, at least surprising to those of us who first came to know him casually in Bangkok bars.  His outlook is an unusual combination of the darkness of Lord Byron or Nathaniel Hawthorne and the "ultimate positivist" -- a "phlegmatic Pollyanna," if you will.  This is reflected in some of his creative works archived here.

Hailing originally from California, Richard has long been resident in Asia.  He lived a lengthy period in Japan, where he learned karate to advanced level.

Let us know your reactions -- Richard pores over any reader's comments.  Send us an e-mail at mekhongkurt@bangkokatoz.com and write "Diran" in the subject line.  Enjoy!

By the way, for a *limited* time only, there are a few of Richard's beautiful but out-of-print book The Vanishing Tribes of Burma available through the good offices of the folks at Amazon.com.  Just click on the book's cover below -- but hurry; there are fewer than a dozen left!  People in Thailand can buy copies at Asia Books.
